Elvio Cogno Barolo Vigna Elena Riserva is a barrel-aged red wine made by Elvio Cogno from the rosé clone of the Nebbiolo variety in the DOCG Barolo Riserva, in Piedmont (Italy).
After working in one of Piedmont’s leading wineries in La Morra, in the Cuneo region, Elvio Cogno acquired a historic 18th century estate surrounded by 11 hectares of vineyards in Novello in 1990. Now Elvio has retired, his daughter Nadia and son-in-law Valter Fissore have taken over the project with the same respect that her father had in both the vineyard and the winery.
Elvio Cogno Barolo Vigna Elena Riserva starts life in a one-hectare vineyard at 380 metres above sea level. This is a micro-plot with 26-year-old vines planted on limestone, clay and sandy soils. They use environmentally friendly cultivation methods, vine density is limited and the grapes are harvested when fully ripe.
In the winery, Elvio Cogno Barolo Vigna Elena Riserva is fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. It undergoes a 30-day post-fermentation maceration with cap plunges and following malolactic fermentation, it is aged for 36 months in large 40-hl Slovenian oak barrels, followed by 24 months of refining in the bottle.
Elvio Cogno Barolo Vigna Elena Riserva was made in honour of Elena, Valter Fissore and Nadia Cogno’s daughter. The wine label features a drawing of Elena’s from when she was just three years old, a drawing that has become the symbol of the wine. Pure expression of the Nebbiolo rosé clone.
