Once Helios Estévez actualized the dream of vinifying the vineyards that his father, the exiled poet Antonio Estevez, cultivated in his native village of Valtuille de Abajo, in Castilla y León (Spain), the family's longing for a return to their roots was fulfilled. Indeed, although the writer, persecuted by the dictatorship, could never return to his homeland, the land beckoned him. Thus, his descendants embark on this venture just as the Denominación de Origen Bierzo introduces a novel and revolutionary classification of wines into smaller geographical units to enhance the unique landscapes of the region, such as El Coutao, El Rapolao, Villegas, Poulosa, or Casares.
Estévez Bodegas y Viñedos Versos Casares is a sensational blend crafted with indigenous grape varieties mencía, alicante bouschet, and palomino, originating from clay soils rich in iron with the presence of pebbles, at an altitude of 680 meters above sea level. Vines aged 75 years are tended with care and harvested by hand at the optimal point of ripeness. In the winery, the grapes ferment with 15% whole clusters and native yeasts in open stainless steel tanks of 2,000 liters. Subsequently, malolactic fermentation and aging are conducted in well-seasoned 500-liter French oak barrels for 12 months.
Undoubtedly, Helios Estévez and his family could not be happier, having realized his father's dream with a project deeply rooted in the native soil. And all the more so as their wines are garnering recognition from the community for their exceptional quality. Wines like Estévez Bodegas y Viñedos Versos Casares, which not only value tradition, history, and the character of each terroir but also pay tribute to a man who, with a heavy heart, had to flee his native land.
