About Familia Nin-Ortiz La Rodeda

On many occasions—especially in marketing terms—Biodynamics can be an effective lure. At the very least, the word appears on the label. Sometimes, it’s even inevitable to take a leap of faith and believe what you’re drinking. However, this will never be the case with Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz and their red wine Familia Nin-Ortiz La Rodeda.
 
Although they are not zealots of natural wine (Ester has even stated that “Priorat would not have survived without herbicides”), this pair of vintners can indeed be credited as ambassadors of this movement in Spain. So much so that the winery Familia Nin-Ortiz is part of La Renaissance des Apppellations, the biodynamic group led by Nicolas Joly, which sets very stringent principles for biodynamic producers. Think of it as the premier league of Biodynamics, so to speak.
 
With this foundation, any wine produced by this duo can be a spectacle. In the case of Familia Nin-Ortiz La Rodeda, this single-varietal of garnacha peluda is cultivated in Tros de la Teresina i Daniel, a small 0.4-hectare plot located in Porrera, in the D.O.Q. Priorat, where black slate soils abound. However, what truly sets this vineyard apart is its altitude (650 meters above sea level), its layout (on a steep slope), and the age of the vines (around 79 years). With all these characteristics, it’s no wonder that Familia Nin-Ortiz La Rodeda is an extraordinarily special red wine.
 
When the raw material is good, there is little need for intervention. Why spoil what nature has gifted us? Familia Nin-Ortiz La Rodeda ferments with whole clusters, using indigenous yeasts, and will rest for several months in used French oak barrels. The plot where it originates is very small, which is why each vintage is highly limited (between 200 and 300 bottles).
 
So, when you come across a bottle of Familia Nin-Ortiz La Rodeda, let go of your scepticism and give it a try. There is no safer bet than this.

Familia Nin-Ortiz La Rodeda 2021 is a red wine with character. On the nose, it reveals aromas of ripe fruits such as plums and blackberries, accompanied by a hint of spices. On the palate, it is concentrated and well-structured, with smooth tannins and a lingering finish. The barrel aging imparts a subtle complexity, making each sip a well-rounded and satisfying experience. Perfect for those seeking a wine with depth and elegance.
