Swimming against the tide requires courage, confidence, and resilience. Going against trends, majority opinions, or established norms is no easy feat. In the case of Fernando Mora, Master of Wine and founder of Bodegas Frontonio, this determination has been elevated to an art form. So much so that he even named his project after the patron saint of his village, San Frontonio, whose legend tells of his decapitated head miraculously floating upstream against the current of the river Ebro until it reached the town. With this same rebellious spirit, Mora presents us with a collection of limited-production wines that celebrate local grape varieties, ancient techniques, and the terroir of Valdejalón (Aragón).
His wine Frontonio Elástico is a blend of local white varieties such as macabeo, garnacha blanca, palomino, robal, or cayetana blanca... These are vines around 60 years old, planted at an altitude of approximately 800 metres on sandstone soil, and they are cultivated with respect using organic treatments. The harvest is done by hand, and in the winery, vinification is carried out with native yeasts at a controlled temperature. Afterwards, the wine ages for 12 months on lees in underground concrete tanks.
Reviving mountain vineyards, updating ancient techniques, and highlighting the triangle formed by the DOs Campo de Borja, Cariñena, and Calatayud, Frontonio Elástico is a most elegant mountain white wine. A delightful blend against the current that makes it truly unique.
