Frontonio Microcósmico Macabeo is a white wine produced by Bodegas Frontonio in Épila, IGP Valdejalón.
Bodegas Frontonio was founded in 2008 by two friends from Aragón, Fernando Mora, Master of Wine, and Mario López, oenologist at Bodegas Borsao.
The aim of Bodegas Frontonio is to elevate the Valdejalón region and its vineyards, primarily planted with old Garnacha vines, under a continental Mediterranean climate. They directly manage approximately 50 hectares, certified organic since 2017. Most of the vineyards are located around Épila, with varying ages, exposures, altitudes, and soil types. The climate is continental Mediterranean, with low rainfall (200-500 l/m2/year), 300 hours of sunshine annually, and many windy days, known as El Cierzo.
Currently, Bodegas Frontonio produces garage wines in the backroom of a small bulk wine cellar, vinifying with minimal intervention, plot by plot. As a result, we find excellent wines, authentic and full of character.
Frontonio Microcósmico Macabeo is crafted from Macabeo grapes from a 10-hectare vineyard over 35 years old, located in Épila at an altitude of about 500 metres on deep limestone-clay soils with pebbles. The harvest of Frontonio Microcósmico Macabeo is done manually, with grape selection in the vineyard. Once in the winery, after destemming, the grapes undergo skin maceration at 8°C for 6 hours. Following the free-run juice extraction and settling, fermentation takes place in cement tanks at 16°C for 15 days. After fermentation, it remains in these tanks with its fine lees for several months, with 10% of the wine aged in used 500-litre oak barrels.
