Gaba do Xil Mencía 2021 is a true gem of the DO. Valdeorras. From the bottle emanate enveloping aromas of fresh forest fruits, such as blackberries and raspberries, complemented by subtle spicy notes that add complexity. On the palate, this wine impresses with its perfect balance between ripeness and acidity. Its flavours fill the mouth with gentle herbal nuances, providing a pleasant and rounded experience. The finish surprises with its persistence and elegance, leaving a lasting impression. This 2021 vintage is distinguished by its minerality, marked by a granite terroir that imparts a unique and refined texture.

About Gaba Mencía

In its early days, back in 1994, Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza possessed an abundance of ideas but very limited resources. Nevertheless, this did not prevent them from crafting Gaba Mencía, which, according to Decanter, is among the finest single-varietals of this grape variety.
 
Right in Galicia, within the DO. Valdeorras, Telmo and Pablo discover the most Atlantic version of mencía. Fresh, expressive, and remarkably flavourful. This highly appealing profile is located in the easternmost part of the appellation, in the villages of Larouco, Santa Cruz, and Las Ermitas, in the areas of A Torgueira, O Barreiro, Valerio, and Valdemás, where there are reddish, clayey, and slate soils with low fertility and limited retention of the abundant rainfall characteristic of the region. In this location, at an altitude of approximately 500 metres, Telmo and Pablo have their own vineyards; however, the contribution of traditional local suppliers is also of utmost importance, as they, like the two oenologists, meticulously tend to the viticulture phase. This entails manual and artisanal work, preserving tradition, with hand harvesting and meticulous selection in the field itself.
 
The grapes for Gaba Mencía are swiftly transported to the winery in crates, where they are processed and incubated in stainless steel vats, undergoing spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. In these same vats, Gaba Mencía will rest for at least a year until bottling.
 
Fresh, natural, and mineral, a pure expression of the terroir. Gaba Mencía is a marathon, demonstrating that what truly matters is not how one starts, but how one ultimately crafts one of Spain's most esteemed red wines.

2019

Gaba do Xil Tinto 2019 is a juicy red wine with an intense nose dominated by floral notes and red fruits. On the palate it is powerful, unctuous and elegant. A fruity textured wine with refreshing acidity and balsamic touches.

2011 On the palate this wine is fresh, silky and medium-bodied, with the appropriate acidity and intense tannins. Medium-length finish and appropriate persistence. A serious and enjoyable slightly bitter finish. Fruity and mineral sensations felt at retro-olfaction.

Cherry colour with purple reflections. Clean and bright.

Clean noise, medium-high intensity. Fragrant floral notes stand out accompanied by intense aromas of ripe black fruit, especially blackberries, ripe and juicy, giving way to spicy and mineral notes.
2010 Red wine with a strong attack. Creamy, light and fresh mid palate with plenty of fruit and balsamic notes. Adequate acidity. Very persistent with a fruity aftertaste.

Aromatically, it is a very interesting wine, with many flavours of fruit (mainly red) and lots of flowers. Good mineral background.
