About LaRural Malvasia de Sitges

Rescued from the brink of extinction by a handful of visionaries, the Malvasía de Sitges is currently experiencing a golden era. With just 125 hectares spread across 180 plots, mostly in Penedès but also in other areas of Catalonia, its wines are stirring genuine admiration. So much so that its single-varietal offerings have become fashionable and can be found in the most distinguished restaurants. One winery that diligently works to showcase the unique character of this challenging Mediterranean grape is LaRural, an estate that for 5 generations the Padró family has cultivated in Alt Camp (Tarragona). With the addition of the latest generation (Xavi and Andreu Padró), they have been inspired to return to winemaking as their ancestors did. A method that aligns with the community of natural wines and resonates with the very essence of Malvasía de Sitges.

With a commitment to preserving the identity of this Mediterranean grape, the Padró brothers present LaRural Malvasia de Sitges, a single-varietal wine made from vines planted in clay-limestone soil at an altitude of over 350 meters above sea level. The vineyard is organically farmed, and by respecting the environment to the utmost, they manage to harvest ecologically certified grapes of exceptional quality. The grapes are handpicked and immediately transported to the winery. There, they macerate with the skins for 25 days without disturbing the cap, and after pressing, they are placed in stainless steel tanks. Finally, the wine matures on lees for 10 months and is bottled unclarified, unfiltered, and without the addition of SO2.

2022

LaRural Malvasia de Sitges 2022 is an orange wine redolent with mountain herb aromas, complemented by citrus and mineral undertones. On the palate, it unfurls a captivating array of coriander seeds, blue fenugreek, marigold, saffron, and a spice bouquet that encompasses oregano, dill, cumin, and fennel seeds. These aromas and flavors dance in perfect harmony against a wonderfully saline backdrop.
