Mengoba Las Botas is a white wine crafted by Bodegas y Viñedos Mengoba in Carracedelo, Bierzo, without a designated origin.
Bodegas y Viñedos Mengoba was established in 2007 by the acclaimed oenologist Gregory Pérez. After his initial experiences in France (Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste and notably at Château Cos d'Estournel), his family roots—and the encouragement of a friend—brought him to Spain, specifically to Bierzo.
Gregory Pérez's philosophy is rooted in the respect and sustainability of the vineyard, employing non-aggressive treatments, eschewing herbicides, working with indigenous varieties at low yields, understanding the soils, and vinifying with traditional methods.
The vineyards are situated on steep slopes over 600 metres above sea level, facing south and ventilated by constant air currents. The soil comprises a mix of clay and decomposed slate, within a wooded environment rich in natural diversity.
The climate in this region is mild and temperate with high humidity. The average annual temperature is 12.3°C, with a minimum of 3.6°C in winter and a maximum of 23.6°C during the hottest summer months.
Mengoba Las Botas is crafted with Godello from small plots, with vines over 70 years old planted in goblet form on clay-limestone, stony, and slate soils, located in the municipalities of Carracedo, Espanillo, Valtuille, and Villafranca del Bierzo.
The harvest is manual with grape selection in the vineyard. Once destemmed and crushed, it undergoes a pre-fermentation maceration and is introduced into two Manzanilla casks over 150 years old where it ferments with native yeasts. The wine is aged for 10 months on its fine lees in the same Manzanilla casks. Prior to bottling, it is stabilised, clarified, and gently filtered.
Mengoba Las Botas is a mature, unctuous, and dry wine. Only 500 bottles of this rarity, which uniquely fuses the freshness and rusticity of northern wines with the intensity and character of southern wines.
