About Oxer Kuusu

Vasco mythology, with its rich oral tradition, transports us to a magical and ancient world where supernatural beings intertwine with nature, the elements, and the everyday life of the Basques. Among these magical figures is Kuusu, a type of elf or scarecrow who protects the fields by warding off evil spirits. A true guardian of ecosystems, ensuring the earth's balance.

Inspired by this mythological figure, Oxer Bastegieta, a winery in constant pursuit of hidden gems in semi-forgotten plots, presents its latest venture in the Toro region, in Zamora (Castilla y León), with a wine that is captivating international critics: Oxer Kuusu.

Oxer Kuusu originates from a unique vineyard of merely 0.9 hectares, planted in 1920 in the locality of Villabuena del Puente. Crafted from tinta de toro grapes with a small percentage of albillo mayor, its grapes grow organically in sandy soils rich in quartz, where the poor terrain and low yields per hectare contribute to the exceptional quality of the grapes.

Similarly, the vinification is conducted with utmost respect for the environment, allowing the wine to speak for itself and purely reflect the terroir. Initially, fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in 1,000-litre French oak vats and used 500-litre barrels, followed by malolactic fermentation and subsequent ageing for 12 months in 600L foudres to express the wine's unique personality.

As a result, Oxer Kuusu is the perfect expression of a fresh and elegant wine. A tribute to the land and its history, which not only connects with the past but also captivates hearts in the present. A wine with soul, much like Vasco mythology, brimming with magic and nature.
 

2023

Oxer Kuusu 2023 is a refined and elegant red wine, characterised by prominent floral notes of violets. On the nose, there are intense aromas of black fruits and a hint of wild herbs, complemented by a subtle mineral undertone. The tannic structure is smooth and fluid, thanks to the fine sand and quartz soils. Its freshness and excellent acidity provide great length on the palate, promising good ageing potential and a concentrated profile.
