About Oxer Matalaz

Every village has its heroes, however small, and their legacy endures through the stories passed down from generation to generation. Matalaz was one such hero. A priest who defied the nobility and fought for justice, yet whose sacrifice made him an eternal symbol of resistance. Although his uprising ended with his tragic beheading, his name remains alive as an emblem of bravery and the fight for equality. It is this very spirit of striving for authenticity and justice that Oxer Bastegieta, a young Basque winemaker, captures in his wines. As he puts it: "a tribute to the wines of yesteryear, but in my own way."

In honour of this legacy, Oxer presents Oxer Matalaz, a young red wine whose vibrant fruity character and pronounced floral elegance evoke the traditional reds of the villages of Rioja Alavesa. Crafted from the tempranillo, mazuelo, viura, and graciano varieties, this wine reflects the rich tradition and history of the century-old vineyards of Lapuebla de Labarca in Rioja Alavesa, where vines, ranging from 50 to 80 years old, thrive in stony soils, yielding low quantities but of exceptional quality.

Oxer's work in the vineyard is grounded in regenerative and organic farming practices, reminding us of the importance of nurturing the land that sustains us. His winemaking process is meticulous and environmentally respectful, employing indigenous yeasts and malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. The wine, which rests for 8 months in 500-litre barrels of various uses, is the result of an approach that seeks to preserve purity and authenticity in every bottle.

With its freshness and elegance, Oxer Matalaz is a true homage to resilience, tradition, and the legacy of winemaking. Like the hero it is named after, this wine is a testament that the genuine and the exceptional never fade away, but are carried forward through time.
