About Pittacum Aurea

Pittacum Aurea is a D.O. Bierzo red wine by Bodegas Pittacum.
A single varietal from Mencía produced with grapes from Finca Areixola. The estate has vines that are over 100 years old, and only allows manual intervention on the grapes. The grapes have never been touched by heavy machinery.
The harvest takes place manually, and the grapes are brought over to the winery in small 12 kg boxes, ensuring there are no undesired breakages before they reach the winery.
The grapes then pass through a sorting table in which they are selected cluster by cluster. They are then crushed without being destemmed.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks for 15 days at 28ºC. Batonages and light pump-overs are applied.
Following fermentation, the wine macerates for 20 days before devatting and is left for two more weeks in the tank before passing to new French oak barrels where it ages for 14 months without a single racking being carried out.
It later rests in the bottle for two more years before being put on the market.
Pittacum Aurea is a fantastic wine that is in sync with the terroir and weather conditions of its vineyard. It is a perfect demonstration of the winery's commitment to the environment.
2018

Pittacum Aurea 2018 is a robust and intricate red, resplendent in hue. Olfactorily, it is refined, featuring an array of red fruits (morello cherry, redcurrant) and mineral nuances. On the palate, it is well-structured and harmonious. The tannins are forceful. It culminates in an enduring and profound finish.
2008 An astringent attack. Balanced and fresh with a long finish. Good acidity. Redcurrant, ripe dark fruit and spices.

A very richly coloured wine. Picota red with a maroon rim.

A very elegant nose, essence of Mencía. Red fruit, redcurrant, mountain herbs, minerals, earth and rock.
