About Protos Selección El Grajo Viejo

Protos Selección El Grajo Viejo is a red wine crafted by Protos using the tinto fino variety within the DO. Ribera del Duero.

Protos, a name meaning first in Greek, was established in 1927 as the inaugural winery of the Ribera del Duero. It is a forward-thinking venture that presently upholds its philosophy of quality worldwide. A significant enterprise that already boasts two wineries in the Ribera: Peñafiel (Valladolid) and Anguix (Burgos), where they produce their crianza and reserva reds, and another in Rueda, La Seca (Valladolid), where they produce white wines from the verdejo variety. Additionally, from a structural standpoint, Protos features spectacular facilities. A building that has even been awarded the Pritzker Prize for architecture due to its outstanding functional design.

Protos Selección El Grajo Viejo originates from very old vines over 70 years of age situated at more than 800 m above sea level. Traditional farming practices are employed, resulting in a limited yield of 1,500 kilograms per hectare. The harvest is conducted manually in 20 kg crates, meticulously selecting the finest clusters in the field.

In the winery, the grapes of Protos Selección El Grajo Viejo undergo selection on a sorting table, berry by berry before destemming. Following this, Protos Selección El Grajo Viejo undergoes alcoholic fermentation and maceration in 500-litre French oak barrels for 24 days at a temperature of 28ºC. Finally, malolactic fermentation and ageing are conducted in new French oak barrels from three different cooperages over 18 months.

Protos Selección El Grajo Viejo is an exceptional Ribera with limited production that showcases the full power, elegance, and expression of a truly unique terroir.
