About Timo Mayer Syrah

Timo Mayer Syrah is the perfect red wine for those who love this variety. Abundant in France, and well received in Australia, it is believed that Syrah comes from the city of Shiraz (in present-day Iran) and that little by little, thanks to the route taken by Greek traders and navigators, it spread not only across the Mediterranean (we have a lot to thank the Greeks for!), but also to other more distant places, like South Africa, California and Australia.

In the Yarra Valley, specifically in the state of Victoria (in the southeast of Australia), Timo Mayer is taking a chance on this variety, although he is not risking much because it has been clearly demonstrated that the Syrah in this territory produces spectacular results. Mayer, who comes from a long line of German vignerons dating back over 400 years, has reserved a small part of the upper reaches of his Bloody Hill vineyard (where he grows mainly Pinot Noir) for this variety. Shiraz (as it is known in Australia) grows here on volcanic soil (deep and fertile) and between 200 and 470 metres above sea level. The climate is very peculiar, as it is cooler than the rest of Australia, with wet winters, dry summers and moderate temperature variations due to the influence of the sea. And the work, which is entirely manual, is made difficult by the steepness of the hills (hence why the vineyard is called Bloody Hill).

In terms of vinification, Timo Mayer Syrah is made in the same way as his iconic Timo Mayer The Doktor (100% Pinot Noir): the clusters are taken to the winery and kept whole, fermenting with all the stalks using native yeasts. A true believer in minimal intervention, Mayer will allow this single-variety Syrah to spend 11 months aging in used foudres.

Timo Mayer Syrah is the perfect red wine for those who love this variety. As much as it has already been tried and enjoyed, the Australian character of this queen variety from the Rhône is sure to continue to surprise people.

Timo Mayer Syrah 2020 is an elegant red wine. The bouquet presents a smoky and spicy aroma. On the palate, it retains this profile, boasting a full body, meaty texture, and refined tannins. Complementing these characteristics are flavors of cherry juice, morello cherries, and mushrooms. It possesses both power and structure. The finish is extensive and enduring.
