About Viña Cubillo

In the realm of wine, adversity has often been the catalyst for creating genuine oenological treasures. Who could have imagined that noble rot would give rise to such exceptional sweet wines as Sauternes in France or Tokaji in Hungary? Or that the harsh conditions of extreme winters, capable of freezing grapes on the vine, would be the secret behind the vibrant sweetness and freshness of Ice Wines in Canada and Germany? Yet, if there is a clear example of resilience in the history of wine, it is the impact of phylloxera. This pest devastated French vineyards in the 19th century, compelling the exploration of new horizons. Thus, regions like Rioja not only became key suppliers but also absorbed and refined the winemaking practices brought by French vintners. Many settled in the Barrio de la Estación in Haro, transforming this small town into a hub of innovation and quality. The outcome was an exponential increase in the quality of Rioja wines, consolidating their reputation and earning international acclaim. Among these emerging gems stands out López de Heredia (Viña Tondonia), one of the most emblematic wineries in Haro, which remains a symbol of tradition, excellence, and oenological legacy. A true “cathedral of wine” that holds the perfect formula for crafting genuine oenological masterpieces that endure over time.

One of these, Viña Cubillo, is a blend of the classic Rioja varieties tempranillo, garnacha tinta, mazuela, and graciano sourced from an estate of the same name, where vines over 40 years old thrive in clay-limestone soils situated at an altitude of 465 metres above sea level. When the grapes reach their optimal ripeness, they are hand-harvested and immediately transported to the winery. There, traditional vinification is carried out with three years of ageing, involving two rackings per year. Finally, Viña Cubillo is clarified and bottled without filtration.

With a great ageing potential of approximately 10 years, Viña Cubillo is a classic Rioja where tradition and innovation go hand in hand. A creation that not only honours the resilience that made the DOCa Rioja a key region after phylloxera but also reflects the spirit that turned Haro into a hub of vinicultural excellence, recognised worldwide.

2017 Viña Cubillo 2017 emerges as a red wine with a distinctive history, owing to the unusual conditions of its harvest, as the frosts of that year destroyed 100% of the vineyard's vegetation. The harvested grapes were part of the second generation and matured in a much shorter cycle, given that the harvest was conducted earlier. On the nose, it surprises with a unique array of aromas: damp earth, mushrooms, truffles, and a hint of undergrowth that evoke a stroll through an autumn forest. As it breathes, its gentle notes of dried leaves and withered flowers envelop the surroundings, adding complexity. On the palate, it offers elegance expressed through its medium body and well-integrated tannins, delivering a finish that is slightly lighter than anticipated. It is recommended for those seeking a wine with character and authenticity, a reflection of a vintage marked by its rapid evolution and unique expression.
2016

Viña Cubillo 2016 is a red wine that captivates with its vivacity and nuanced maturity. Upon first encounter, it unfurls scents of ripe plums, interwoven with hints of black pepper and a spectrum of sweet spices. Undertones of eucalyptus and licorice add complexity to its aromatic profile. On the palate, it is delicate and invigorating, with a persistence that leaves a concentrated and sophisticated impression. This wine is, unquestionably, an exemplar of the harmony between fruit and spice.
2015

Viña Cubillo 2015 is a red wine with aromas of ripe red fruits, liquorice, sweet spices and light leafy nuances on the nose. The palate is savoury, with firm tannins and a pleasant ripeness. A red wine full of the purity, finesse and tradition of a classic Rioja.
2014

Viña Cubillo 2014 is a richly concentrated, mature, and intricate red wine. The bouquet reveals an abundance of scents including dried orange, plums, mushrooms, tobacco, and damp leaves. On the palate, it is flavorsome, with a dominance of citrus fruits. It possesses firm and succulent tannins.
2013

Viña Cubillo 2013 is a robust red wine. The bouquet is vibrant and delicate, enduring, with a pronounced core of licorice. On the palate, it is crisp and refined, featuring sleek tannins. The finish is invigorating with a citrusy zest. Long-lasting.

2005 Soft and light wine from La Rioja with a nice mid palate, with well balanced fruit and toasted aromas. Its good acidity provides it with a nice freshness. It has a good but not very persistent finish. A pleasant and easy-drinking wine, typical from Rioja.

Intense dark cherry colour with ruby red edges. Bright wine with good tears.

The persistence of ripe black fruit aromas stands out along with notes of tobacco and liquorice and toasted hints that become more intense as the wine opens up. In the background, light spicy and elegant leather notes are felt.
2004 Refined, fresh and persistent. This wine is delicious, friendly and with a long finish.
