About Vinas Mora Kaamen

COVID brought the world to a standstill... and catalysed numerous changes. While half the globe came to an abrupt halt, Kreso Petrekovic stepped on the gas. Instead of returning to New York, where he worked as a sommelier and importer, he remained in Primošten, his coastal haven in Croatia. A place of rugged beauty, bush-trained vines, and dry stone walls. There, amidst silence and sea, an idea was sparked.

The pandemic afforded him the time and perspective to view a place he had always been connected to with fresh eyes. His passion for the babić grape, the landscape, and the small-scale winegrowers who kept it alive, led him to establish Vinas Mora, his second venture after Podrum Franjo. But he didn’t do it alone; alongside local vintners Neno and Josipa Marinov and his friend Niko Dukan, they revived a nearly abandoned old cooperative. They revitalised it not just to produce wine, but to safeguard a way of life.

Kaamen, which means "stone" in Croatian, is precisely that. A tribute to the challenging land, the manual labour, the character of Primošten. A natural red made from 100% babić grapes, from organic vineyards up to 50 years old, on poor and stony soils where mechanisation is impossible. Everything is done by hand, as in the past, but with a contemporary perspective.

In the winery, fermentation is spontaneous in open 1,000-litre barrels with four days of skin contact without temperature control. A quarter of the wine is aged in used 500-litre oak barrels and finally bottled unfiltered and unfined, with only a minimal dose of sulphites.

Vinas Mora Kaamen is a vibrant and genuine red. Fresh fruit, delicate structure, and the authenticity of the essential. It speaks of the land and those who tend to it. More than just a bottle, it is a declaration that champions the rural, values simplicity, and makes natural wine an attitude, not a trend. A village wine, crafted with pride and without pretension.
