About Barahonda Casa del Capitán Monastrell

The Murcian D.O. Yecla, in southeastern Spain, is considered the “kingdom of the Monastrell”. Few grapes like this red variety take root and grow with such strength and quality as they do here. In some places there are still vines that survived the phylloxera crisis that devastated the Spanish vineyards at the end of the 19th century. These are known as Pie Franco vineyards, and they are more than 100 years old. Undoubtedly a jewel used to make very special wines like Barahonda Casa del Capitán Monastrell.

Barahonda Casa del Capitán Monastrell starts life in the 150 hectares owned by the Barahonda winery. Founded in 1850, this family business, run by the Candela family, continues to show how well Monastrell is suited to the area’s climate and orography. It should be noted that the D.O. Yecla is a very special area, right in the middle of the border between the plateau and the Mediterranean, at a point of significant altitude, between 535 and 800 metres above sea level. The climate, totally Mediterranean with continental overtones, influences the cultivation of the variety, with long, cold winters and hot summers, with scarce rainfall (mainly in autumn and spring). Barahonda Casa del Capitán Monastrell is always made following processes that are totally respectful of the environment, carefully monitoring the process at each stage to achieve a totally vegan red wine. In the winery, Barahonda Casa del Capitán Monastrell begins by being selected and vatted in open stainless steel tanks where it will remain for approximately 20 days. Here it will macerate and ferment, passing directly to French oak barrels (aged for seven months). Simply fascinating.

A toast to the Monastrell! A toast to Barahonda! And a toast to Barahonda Casa del Capitán Monastrell!
