It’s time to say Sherry!

02/11/2020 Special moments

The largest event dedicated to spreading the great passion awakened by Sherry Wines returns: Sherry Week, which takes place from 2nd to 8th November, 2020.

In its seventh edition, this year Sherry Week aims to unite thousands of Sherry wine lovers through a large number of events which will take place in more than 30 countries around the world. The program includes interesting online activities and because at Decántalo we’re Sherry Lovers, we have a wide selection of sherry wines to offer you, so you have no excuse to miss this great celebration.

During these years, the success of Sherry Week has grown so much that in 2020 it’s been awarded the best campaign on social networks

Indeed, in this very complicated year for everyone, Sherry Week also intends to pay tribute to one of the sectors most affected by the global pandemic, the hospitality industry, and among its many events it’s created #MySherryAmigo, where it invites #sherrylovers to raise a toast to all the people who are behind the bars and restaurants.

Next, we present a paired selection of Sherry wines so you can salivate and encourage yourself to learn a little more about these great representatives of the world of wine.

5 wines for celebrating Sherry Week

FINO

El Fino is a generous dry white wine made under a veil of flor, that thin white layer of yeast which forms naturally on the wine as it ages and gives it a series of organoleptic characteristics which make it unique in the world.

A vino fino is an ideal aperitif, as it stimulates the taste buds and has a wonderful ability to enhance the flavor of any dish.

Fino Maestro Sierra

maestro sierra

Maestro Sierra is a small Jerez winery which is almost two centuries old. They make the Fino Maestro Sierra with a careful selection of palomino grapes which age under veil of flor for a minimum of three years. This fino sherry is an excellent discovery to start on a journey through the wonderful world of Jerez wines. An excellent quality fino which exudes tradition, and at a very good price.

Pair it with a good Iberian ham, its star partner, a gastronomic experience good enough to reach the sky.

MANZANILLA

Manzanilla is a vino generoso dry white wine which shares production under biological aging with vino fino but which comes from Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Cádiz, a location closer to the sea which gives it different characteristics than those of its brother, the fino. There are those who say that manzanillas are more subtle and less sharp than vinos finos, which are both extraordinary and delicious.

Maruja Manzanilla

maruja

The Juan Piñero Winery makes Manzanilla Maruja from the fermentation of palomino grapes in the wine presses which exist in the winery itself, and for its aging it uses 8 criaderas where the wine rests under a veil of flor for at least 8 years. Maruja Manzanilla is elegant, salty, persistent and with all the essence of Sanlúcar.

If you’re a Japanese food lover, try it with sushi and sashimis. You’re in for a surprise!

AMONTILLADO

Amontillado is the Sherry wine which combines biological aging and oxidative aging, that is, it begins its life in the same way as a fino or a manzanilla, with aging under its yeasts (veil of flor) but at a given moment it shows more complex characteristics than those of a fino which make it selected to be fortified and then go through barrel aging, as if it were any other wine (oxidative aging). It’s a complex wine capable of offering superb pairings.

Valdespino Amontillado Tío Diego

valdespino

Made by the Valdespino winery, one of the oldest in Jerez, which currently belongs to the Estévez Group and is a model in the sector, Valdespino Amontillado Tío Diego is made from palomino grapes which come from the well-known Pago Macharnudo Alto, which ferment and are raised under a veil of flow and then go through at least eight years of oxidative aging, which gives it a balanced and ample character.

Try serving it with a mushroom risotto. The hazelnut nuances of the amontillado enhance the flavor of the mushrooms and its sharp and fresh character balances the creaminess of the risotto.

OLOROSO

It’s a sherry wine made with palomino grape and which doesn’t undergo aging under veil of flor. The characteristics of the base wine make the wine-tasters decide to fortify it and pass it directly to oxidative aging, that is, to add alcohol so that the veil doesn’t develop, and age it like any other wine, in barrels. The result gives rise to a wine which offers very rich nuanced nose notes, as its name indicates.

A complex and well-structured wine with a powerful and tasty mid palate, ideal for serving with intense flavors.

Oloroso Don Nuño

don nuno

Produced by one of the great Jerez wineries, Lustau, Oloroso Don Nuño is a dry wine, complex and truly gastronomic, which is worth much more than it costs.

It’s an ideal wine to serve with cured cheeses. And, if you prefer a more filling dish, use it to go with a grilled red tuna. You’ll be impressed!

PALO CORTADO

When it comes to individuality, palo cortado is the sherry wine that wins hands down. There’s a mystery around its birth as it’s essentially a wine that chooses its destiny, to put it poetically. They’re wines which start from other classifications, such as vinos finos, which as they evolve in the barrels show a certain complexity and elegance which distinguishes them from the others. After being tasted, these wines are selected and separated to be matured and looked after in a special way. This is how a palo cortado comes into existence.

Fernando de Castilla Antique Palo Cortado

don nuno

Fernando de Castilla Antique Palo Cortado comes from old soleras of the Rey Fernando de Castilla winery selected with great care and whose soleras are refreshed with vinos finos which show special characteristics that make them stand out from the rest. In short, a great wine which has the elegance and complexity given by its own qualities and the passage through two different types of aging: biological and oxidative. It’s bottled in very limited quantity.

Dare to serve a lamb kebab with a palo cortado, a dish which complements it wonderfully thanks to its strong personality and the tender, spicy touch of the lamb.

Remember that at Decántalo we have a wide selection of fortified wines from Jerez, sweet and dry, for all tastes, moments and occasions. Let yourself be won over by the sherry fever! You won’t regret it!
