About Finca Azaya

The Decanter World Wine Awards are among the most prestigious wine accolades globally. In this annual competition, the British magazine rates and unveils some of the finest wines that should not be missed. This select group, known as the Best in Show, comprises 50 wineries whose creations are sublime. Among them are the Spanish Bodegas Valduero with their Finca Azaya.
 
Finca Azaya is a single-varietal tempranillo crafted by these wineries, located in Gumiel de Mercado (Burgos), at the very heart of the DO.Ribera del Duero. Specifically, Bodegas Valduero is one of the pioneering projects initiated in the region, which has helped to internationalise the viticultural qualities of an area previously little known. Currently, Yolanda García Viadero, the founder's daughter, is responsible for all Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva productions emerging from the winery. Wines of quality with global recognition, like Finca Azaya. 
 
The grapes for Finca Azaya are sourced from 30-year-old vineyards. Vines are planted in clay-limestone soils with a bush vine system to naturally limit production. The harvest is done manually and immediately transported in 14 kg boxes.
 
In the winery, Finca Azaya undergoes alcoholic fermentation and post-fermentative maceration at a controlled temperature between 23 and 28 ºC. Finally, after racking, Finca Azaya rests in oak barrels for 14 months and is stabilised in the bottle for a minimum of 12 months before being released to the market.

2017 Finca Azaya 2017 is a balanced red wine with aromas of red fruit, touches of menthol and roasted notes. On the palate it is powerful but combined, with a persistent finish.
