About Ultreia de Valtuille

Ultreia de Valtuille is a red wine crafted in the DO. Bierzo by one of the most renowned and influential Spanish winemaker-vintners of the moment, Raúl Pérez.

Ultreia de Valtuille is a red wine with very limited production, which, from its first vintage, garnered significant acclaim from international critics.

"Ultreia" was the greeting once used by pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. It is a Latin word that we would translate today as "onward" or "continue".

Ultreia de Valtuille is a single-variety wine made from the old Mencía grape, sourced from a single estate, "Las Villegas," located in the small village of Valtuille. This estate spans just over 1 hectare of old vines, planted in 1908 on clay-limestone soil with a sandy surface. It is situated at an altitude of 530 meters above sea level and enjoys an Atlantic-continental climate—a cold yet relatively moderate climate, as it is located halfway between the interior and the coast. The vinification is carried out with minimal intervention. Fermentation takes place in large wooden vats. After fermentation, long macerations with low extraction are applied.

Ultreia de Valtuille undergoes 14-15 months of aging in used French oak barrels. Once aging is complete, it is bottled without filtering or clarification.

Raúl Pérez is a connoisseur of the Mencía variety, and with this Ultreia de Valtuille, he delivers one of his masterpieces.

This vintage stands out for its refinement and harmony, attributes that make this wine an ideal choice for those seeking a red wine with character and subtlety.

Ultreia de Valtuille 2021 is an open and expressive red wine, renowned for its fruity notes and elegant mineral nuances. On the palate, it is fresh, smooth, and complex, with fine tannins and a velvety texture. The oak is perfectly integrated, providing depth without overshadowing the overall composition of the wine.
 
2019

Ultreia de Valtuille 2019 is a sophisticated and highly articulate wine. Olfactorily, it is exceedingly aromatic and sumptuous, underpinned by a tapestry of fruit and hints of blueberries. On the palate, it presents a saline touch, interwoven with nuances of iron, iodine, and soy sauce. It imparts a silky and warm sensation. Exquisitely graceful.
2015 Ultreia de Valtuille 2015 is a complex, expressive and profound wine. An excellent vintage, revealing all the personality of the Mencía variety naturally, and the character of the terroir where it originates. Powerful on the nose, with ripe black fruit and with spicy and slightly toasted notes. On the palate it is juicy, with minerality and a fresh and lingering finish.
