About Ultreia Paluezas

Twenty-five years encompass a great deal. Just ask Luis Gutiérrez, the Robert Parker critic for Spain, who has spent a quarter of a century tasting and uncovering the finest wines of Spain. If there's an unfailing palate that has sampled (almost) everything, it is his. What have those senses not tasted? Yet, despite the time and experiences (and drinks), there is one wine that has managed to astonish this oenological superman: Ultreia Paluezas.

The DO. Bierzo, the mencía grape, and Raúl Pérez are the three cornerstones of this red wine that spends twelve months in barrel, and which always, regardless of the vintage, "catches the attention" of the esteemed Gutiérrez. His critique explains that perhaps Ultreia Paluezas is so striking due to the limestone soils in which it grows, something rather uncommon in the DO. Bierzo, where slate soils are prevalent. Specifically, this peculiarity is found by Raúl Pérez in a small plot, barely 0.7 hectares, right in the Paluezas site (in the Los Módulos area). Hence its name.

And although Raúl Pérez has deep roots in winemaking—his family has been producing wines in the region since 1752—in this instance, Ultreia Paluezas is part of his personal project where he revives lost vineyards and strives to showcase the full potential of the DO. Bierzo. Initially, he has elevated the mencía to its pinnacle (and succeeded!); now, it is time to reveal in each of his wines the terroir and essence of each location. All of this, evidently, involves hard work in the field and minimal intervention in the winery. Both the harvest and the other tasks in Ultreia Paluezas are conducted manually, and fermentation occurs in the most traditional manner, spontaneously and using native yeasts. Finally, Ultreia Paluezas will rest in used oak barrels for at least one year.
