About Viña Pomal Crianza

It is one of the most iconic wines from Bodegas Bilbaínas, a titan of the DOCa. Rioja. As a true wine enthusiast, you are forewarned not to miss it. Viña Pomal Crianza, a single-varietal tempranillo, is an essential addition to your cellar.
 
After more than 20 vintages, Viña Pomal Crianza remains the quintessential representative of “Riojan winemaking tradition.” Specifically, Bodegas Bilbaínas introduced this wine in 1996 to commemorate the centenary of its founding. Since then, Viña Pomal Crianza has continued to fill glasses on all manner of occasions.
 
The origins of Viña Pomal Crianza can be traced to Rioja Alta, in the village of Haro—specifically at the Pomal estate—within a 90-hectare vineyard rich in a diverse array of soils and microclimates. The clay-limestone, clay-ferrous, and alluvial soils are influenced by an Atlantic climate, with cold winters (including frosts) and mild summers interspersed with springs and autumns featuring moderate rainfall. Under these conditions, Viña Pomal Crianza is born, harvested by hand.
 
Nevertheless, what truly distinguishes Viña Pomal Crianza is its artisanal production, adhering to the traditional steps that so characterise the winemaking of this region: destemming, crushing, alcoholic fermentation, and post-fermentation maceration (lasting approximately two weeks) are the fundamental steps Viña Pomal Crianza must undergo before concluding with its 12-month maturation in American oak barrels.

On the nose, it reveals aromas of ripe red fruits such as cherries and raspberries, complemented by a subtle hint of vanilla and spices from its barrel ageing. On the palate, it is smooth and well-balanced, with soft tannins contributing to a silky texture. Its finish is long-lasting and delightful, inviting one to savour each sip with leisure and attention.

Viña Pomal Crianza 2020 is a smooth, light and fresh, fruity and young red wine with "a modern personality". The nose is very clean and crisp, with spicy and mature aromas. The palate is more classic, with a pleasant and flavorsome mouthfeel. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins.
2019 Viña Pomal Crianza 2019 is a red wine that on the nose presents a delightful aromatic intensity with the emergence of black fruit notes complemented by roasted nuances, vanilla, licorice, and hints of oak. Its palate is smooth and vibrant. A well-structured and succulent red wine, embodying the classic style of Rioja.
2018

Viña Pomal Crianza 2018 epitomizes a classic red wine. Olfactorily, it boasts a pronounced aromatic intensity, replete with scents of violets, black fruits, licorice, vanilla, and roasted nuances. On the palate, it is velvety, harmonious, and vibrant, underpinned by a solid structure and supple tannins.
2015 Viña Pomal Crianza 2015 is a linear red wine, serious and expressive. Once again, this vintage shows its elegance with aromas of ripe red fruit and honest notes of its ageing. In the mouth, it is pleasant, silky and with a quite a long finish.
2012

The palate is balanced, soft and fresh. Shows good structure and soft tannins.
