About Viña Zorzal Bakan

In a wine world steeped in tradition, there are courageous pioneers who dare to defy the norms. The Sanz brothers and Rafael Regadera of Viña Zorzal Wines are among them. Since 2007, they have been like wine detectives, rescuing forgotten vineyards and unique grape varieties in the Navarre region. Championing freedom and an open-minded approach, they present us with astonishing new projects each year, sometimes independently and at other times in collaboration with renowned figures. In this instance, they introduce another innovation that is a true celebration of the indigenous: Viña Zorzal Bakan.

Named Bakan, which in Basque means rare, scarce, singular, unique, this wine is already a statement of intent. Originating from a plot located in the municipality of Fitero, in Navarre (Spain), it hails from historic vineyards where a unique and very special variety, mazuela, is cultivated—a delicate grape that was nearly extinct and of which fewer than 50 hectares remain today. For all these reasons, Viña Zorzal Bakan is exceptionally distinctive. A true marvel of nature that Viña Zorzal Wines has expertly highlighted with the nonconformist style that so distinctly characterises them. In the winery, the grapes ferment with native yeasts in a 1000 L open vat with 20% whole clusters. Finally, the wine matures in 500 L used French oak barrels for up to a year (depending on the vintage, this time may vary).
