Have you ever pondered what it might feel like to be 120 years old? Life would likely feel burdensome, every task would seem twice as arduous, and the rest of the world would appear to race by at breakneck speed while you, serene in your solitude, live at your own deliberate pace, secluded by the years yet liberated by your wisdom. As the adage goes: the devil knows more from being old than from being the devil, right? If one were to personify this concept into a wine, it would undoubtedly be Castro Ventosa Valtuille La Vitoriana.
This red wine derives its name from La Vitoriana, the location situated in the village of Valtuille—in the D.O. Bierzo—home to the century-old vineyard where the mencía and alicante bouchet varieties flourish. Under the stewardship of Castro Ventosa, formerly known as Herederos de Rosaura López Fuente, the Pérez family has succeeded in transforming these wines into bottled treasures that have astonished even the most discerning palates, such as that of Luis Gutiérrez, the esteemed critic of Robert Parker. However, as is often the case, great success is not achieved in isolation. Behind it stand Raúl, José, Meritxell, and Arturo, the grandchildren of Rosaura, a generation that in the early 1990s decided to take a different approach. Thus, from mere bulk wine sellers, they evolved into creators of soulful wines, where—with Raúl as the winemaker—the wines became much more approachable, modern, vibrant, and of very limited production.
Castro Ventosa Valtuille La Vitoriana is cultivated organically and sustainably, with utmost respect for the environment. It is of paramount importance to treat and maintain the quality of the sparse yields harvested from these vines. The winery, situated in close proximity to the archaeological site of Castro Ventosa (from which it takes its name), promptly receives the bunches, which are destemmed and vatted (30% of them whole, unprocessed), in oak vats. Here, the magic will occur, and the indigenous yeasts will play a pivotal role. The 60 days of maturation and the subsequent 12 months of aging will be the crowning touch of this gem.
In total, Castro Ventosa boasts 85 hectares divided into 400 plots. Each one—as the saying goes—of its own kind. And each must be perfectly understood and appreciated. This is only achievable through wisdom. Until we attain it, we can practice with Castro Ventosa Valtuille La Vitoriana. Perhaps with each delicate sip, a bit of its essence will rub off on us.
