About Raúl Pérez Pico Ferreira

It is well-known that Raúl Pérez is a towering figure in the wine industry, and much has been penned about him. Well, almost everything. This indefatigable winemaker from Bierzo ceaselessly crafts and astonishes. His latest triumph is the Raúl Pérez Pico Ferreira.
 
As the name suggests, one must venture to the Pico Ferreira vineyard, located in the village of Toral de los Vados (in León), to discover the roots of this wine. It is here that both Raúl and his nephew César (who also sources grapes for his wines from this site) have discerned the richness of this terrain—perched at an altitude of 710 meters—where slate and clay soils abound. Across a mere 1.4 hectares, the ideal conditions are met for up to 12 varieties to thrive, each offering the best of its characteristics. In the case of Raúl Pérez Pico Ferreira, the chosen varietal is the esteemed mencía. This particular grape has garnered respect in this region, where some ancient vineyards yield a much more robust and concentrated expression than the fruity and aromatic versions typically associated with this varietal. If there is anyone who masters this grape, it is Raúl Pérez.
 
In the cellar, the approach is familiar: utmost respect and minimal intervention for Raúl Pérez Pico Ferreira. The process begins with whole bunches and some destemmed grapes. Spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts lead to brief maturation in wood, where this red wine is finely sculpted. All under the hallmark of quality and the assurance that the name Raúl Pérez brings.
